In a closely divided Senate, every vote matters. Maybe that is why 25 of the upper chamber’s 62 members had perfect attendance records last year. The members with the greatest truancy rates—State Sens. Eric Schneiderman and Charles Fuschillo—only missed six out of 80 sessions, though José Peralta did miss 10 sessions as a member of the Assembly before winning a special election against expelled State Sen. Hiram Monserrate in mid-March.
But the Assembly is a different story. Leading the way in absences from the start of session in January through the chamber recess in July is Queens Assembly Member Vivian Cook, who according to a campaign aide is ill but recovering, having missed 52 out of 84 session days, or nearly 62 percent.
Nonetheless, Cook is petitioning to run for re-election.
Cook’s illness narrowly prevented her Queens colleague, Ann-Margaret Carrozza, from taking the title for worst attendance record for a third consecutive year. Carrozza, though, is retiring to focus on her elder law practice.
Below is a list of the 20 Assembly members who have missed the most days this year. Notably, all 20 are Democrats.
